The field of computer science involves the design and invention of new approaches to computer technology, as well as finding innovative ways to use technology.

The largest segment of those employed in computer science work for the federal government at 26 percent. Computer systems design and related services is the next largest area of employment at 18 percent. Computer science professionals also can work for colleges and universities, in research and development or for software publishers.

The majority of positions in the computer science field require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Some management positions within the field will require a master’s degree, and those who wish to teach computer science at a post-secondary level will be required to possess a doctorate degree.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for computer scientists is $102,190.
