Business

The value of a college education – especially in tough economic times – never can be understated. While most students realize this and understand the importance of continuing their education, many have no idea what kind of education they should seek.

While some students choose to enter college as an official “undeclared” major, college admissions professionals suggest doing so is the worst decision any college student could make. The collective opinion of most college admissions professionals is when a student doesn’t know what to choose, to pick a major that can be applied to more than one career.
A perfect example of just such a major is that of business.

Possessing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a business discipline makes graduates attractive to a variety of business and industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Business programs teach the kinds of quantitative and reasoning skills which can be applied to virtually any career.

Education Requirements

There are several options for degrees in business.

While associate degrees in business are offered, students are encouraged to earn a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business if they wish to be competitive in the working world. Bachelor degrees take roughly four years to complete and will provide students with the basic knowledge of business systems and how they operate, as well as the quantitative and reasoning skills necessary to make sound business decisions. Students can expect coursework in the areas of accounting, business management, marketing and sales, finance and introductory business law.

Candidates who graduate with a bachelor degree in general business will be eligible to work in management positions in both the private and public sectors.

Graduate degrees also are available for business majors, with most quality programs offering online and traditional courses toward completing the degree. Candidates who possess graduate degrees in business can expect to command higher salaries and top-level positions in the industry. Those who wish to teach business at a college level will be required to earn a doctorate degree in business.

Future Outlook

Annual salaries for careers in the business industry range from a low of $40,000 to a high in excess of $100,000, according to data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As a general rule, entry-level positions offer lower wages. High-pressure jobs such as business sales and operations management can command six-figure salaries.

According to a report issued by the National Association of Colleges and Employers in November 2012, college graduates who possess degrees in business can expect a 13 percent greater chance of securing immediate employment upon graduation than they had in previous years. Financial consultants and advisors are in the most demand among all classes of business professionals.
